MATH: Reviewing Area and Perimeter

Reviewing Area and Perimeter:

Area:

Definition: the number of unit squares that cover the surface of a closed figure. The area is measured in square units such as square centimeters, square feet, square inches, etc.

Example: What is the area of the figure below?

Area of a rectangle: Length x Width.

Area of figure: 5 x 6 = 30. Answer: 30 units squared.

*If the units were not specified, just write units squared. If units were specified, like 5 inches in width and 6 inches in length, add the units to the answer (30 inches squared).

*There are multiple ways to write the answer: units^2, units sq., units squared, etc.

Perimeter:

Definition: The length of the outline of a shape. The perimeter of a circle or ellipse is called its circumference.

Example: What is the perimeter of the figure below?

Perimeter of a rectangle: 2L + 2W

Perimeter of figure: 5(2) + 6(2) Answer: 22 Units.

*For the perimeter, units squared is not needed because the perimeter is not in square units for any kind of figure.
