OPINION: Social Media- Pros and Cons

Updated: Nov 3, 2020

Social Media is used by a lot of people, mostly teens. Social media apps like Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok, and many more can have amazing effects on the user as well as negative impacts. Most parents are protective over their children from social media because they are not aware of the many benefits social media can bring, which can eventually cause the child to feel lonely. Another mistake is giving too much freedom to a child who is not mature enough to know the negative impacts of social media, therefore putting the child at harm. It is important to educate yourself about social media and take precautions while enjoying the environment as well.

Here I have prepared a brief pros and cons chart of having social media:

Pros:

  • Allows you to find and keep in touch with people easily:

    • Humans are animals who naturally seek social interaction, no matter if you are an introvert or an extravert. Social media can help both extraverts and introverts in building relationships and meeting new people with common interests.

  • Promotes safety and saves lives in times of crisis:

    • Social media is a great way to spread awareness about world issues and also promotes safety by educating people with important news and facts. Social media can also raise a lot of money for foundations and organizations dedicated in helping the world.

  • Supports talent and art:

    • Social media is a great way to share your talent and receive a lot of support and opportunities to grow your platform.

  • Promotes compassion and empathy:

    • Although some may believe that social media is a toxic environment, social media is filled with positive posts that promote positivity and mental health.

  • Great place for marketing:

    • Some entrepreneurs\ and other professionals use social media to grow their company or organization.

Cons:

  • Can cause addiction

    • Social media addiction is on the rise. Currently, more people are spending most of their waking hours using social media instead of having face-to-face interactions. Internet addiction has negative effects on people’s health and well-being.

  • A risk of privacy

    • Sharing your talents and your life with the world can be exciting and fun, but also dangerous. Giving social media freedom to someone who is not mature enough to know the dangers of social media hacking can cause much harm.

  • Cyberbullying:

    • Cyberbullying is a form of harassment online. When on social media, be aware of toxic people and bullies. Do not communicate or take their words seriously.

  • Negatively affects academic performance:

    • This depends on the user’s time management skills and their ability to behave responsibly.

Of course, there are plenty more pros and cons of the use of social media, however, it solely depends on the individual. The user needs to take responsible and mature actions in order to enjoy this environment. Stay safe!
